Question about the planets and 2012?

I read somewhere that the planets were supposed to line up with the Sun or something in 2012, is this right?

Also, how long ago did this happen last?

Nearly every primative society that engaged in any form of astrology (no matter how seperated from one another they were) predicts that the world will come to any end in the year 2012, when astronomers tell us some rare allignment of planets and stars occurs. However, this allignment has happened before several times in Earth's history, most recently some 13,000 years ago. Did anything significant happen then, or any of the other times when the coming cosmic allignment of 2012 happened in the past?

The mayan calender ends on the winter soltice on dec 2012.There is evidence to support a grand alighnment of the sun,earth,and the center of the galaxy.Has this happened before?If so what were the effects?What are the predictions for this event?
