Have a great day!
Some 3500 years before the Lord Christ was born, a group of people left their home land, somewhere in the North, trekked all the way through the inhospitable regions of the Himalayas, reached the plains below and settled down there. These simple and hardy people were very much pleased to find their new – found land so beautiful and so bounteous. Their hearts were filled with thoughts of deep gratitude and sang the praise of the Maker for the gifts He has so kindly given. At the same time they thought that these gifts should belong to everyone of them, and they all had equal right to enjoy the gifts the new environment offered. And so they said – “Sarve Janah Sukhino bhavanthu’ – let there be happiness for all.
This is the essence of Indian attitude towards its fellow nations and this has been so, ever since the first Aryan settlers declared it. As they penetrated further south, they found another race, already inhabiting the land. They called these natives devils and waged wars with them; but finally owned them up as brothers and the two each influencing the other. And once again they declared ‘ Save Janah Sukhino Bhavanthu’. They could have as well said, ‘Let Aryans alone be happy’, Had they said so, the historians would have praised them for the love of their race.
When most of the European nations were uncivilized or practicing paganism, there appeared a man who renounced his princely pleasures to become an ascetic and declared that desire for worldly pleasures was the root cause of misery in human life. He prescribed a code of conduct to over come this misery and lead a life of joy and contentment. His voice reached far and wide inspiring millions of people in the world. His doctrine of kindness and compassion echoed on the lips of Jesus Christ centuries afterwords, when he said “Love thy neighbors as thou love thyself”. Long ago, long before the world thought of the SPCA, the Jain Thirthankaras preached and practiced kindness to animals integrating it into a religious concept.
All this had happened long ago, long before the advent of modern civilization. When Europe was parading half nakedly, India was trying to comprehend the incomprehensible and see the invisible in the visible creation.
Jesus Christ who taught the doctrine of universal did not preach hatred and intolerance. Those that have not understood the essence of his teachings, cannot realize the fact that religion is a way of life. They believe that it is something related to spiritual pursuits of man, which, at any rate, has nothing to do with his material prosperity. They do not find anything irrational or illogical in accepting two distinct goals in life one leading to material prosperity and the other to spiritual illumination, which can be reached by two different paths. The concept of sin and repentance tries to remove this ambiguity and the two paths rarely, except in the case of great people, try to meet and merge. Therefore, they can practice colonialism on one hand and talk of universal love and justice on the other; proclaim the values of democracy on one hand and lend a supporting hand to despots and dictators with no prick of conscience; declare that all are equal before law and justice and deny, at the same time, a section of its citizens their legitimate due and practice racial discrimination. Even the Communism whose aim it is to create a classless society where man’s finer sentiments will find complete expression, does not hesitate to suppress his independent spirit. To the western mind, there is no contradiction here.
It is precisely what India is trying to do – to narrow the gap between precept and practice the real and the ideal. Not that every Indian born and brought up here, practices this theory. But India has set this as her ideal in her dealings in international affairs. It does not approve of the way permanent membership to the Security Council is given to certain nations though it has no quarrel with them; nor can it understand the logic behind the restrictions imposed upon the membership of the nuclear club; though it refuses to sigh the NPT, it resists the temptation to become a nuclear power.
It is this attitude that is behind its consistent opposition to colonialism, imperialism and racial discrimination, that forms the basis of its foreign policy. It is also opposed to the undeclared war between the USSR and the USA. It cannot understand why the world should be divided into two warring camps simply because their political theories differ. It believes that every nation big or small, has a right to choose its own system of government which is suited to its genius and this should under no circumstance become a cause for conflict or confrontation.
Its non – alignment is therefore not a passive concept of lame excuse to keep away from the scene of confrontation, but a candid expression of its righteous indignation at the meaningless confrontations that would drive the entire world to a state of total devastation – the futility of war, which long ago Emperor Ashoka discovered and dedicated himself to spread the message of peace. It does not therefore find anything irrelevant in its continuation in the British common Wealth of Nations or its tilt towards the Communist Russia; and in its articulations of friendship with USA – they only testify to its total disbelief in war and earnest desire to create a new world order, when the nations of the world can sit and talk in a spirit of friendship political force is certainly novel. Its adoption by Martin Luther King of America and Nelson Mandela of Africa testify to its success as a political weapon.
The Bhoodan Movement advocates for the creation of a new order which encourages willing co-operation of the rich in the stupendous task of elimination of poverty from the soil, finds its echoes in its policy to lend a helping hand to the developing nations of the world, though it itself is a developing nation. The help and assistance that the developed countries offer to the developing in a spirit of understanding is again an endorsement of man’s noble desire to share his prosperity with his unfortunate fellowmen-re-enunciation of its age old wish and hope for the happiness of all mankind – Sarve Janah Sukhino Bhavanthu.
